Lino Miele

On that trip to India in 1988 Lino met Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and a teacher-student relationship began that lasted until Guruji’s death in 2009. He kept his work as a technical director in a theatre while he practised.

His research into the exact vinyasa of the first and intermediate series became a manuscript written under Guruji’s guidance, published at his request in 1994 as Astanga Yoga — The Yoga of Breath. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois gave him the certificate to teach the same year.

He kept returning to Mysore after that, and in 1996 finished a second book on the advanced A and B series. Guruji judged it too soon to publish; the material came out in 2010, in the edition of the book that covers the first through fourth series.

In 1996 Guruji told him to give demonstrations at home. Lino began in Italy, then in other European cities, and the workshops followed. He has taught in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Russia, the United States, India and Italy.

Alongside the books he produced films and posters: the full first series in 1999, the intermediate and advanced A series with Gwendoline Hunt in 2001, and a commemorative calendar for Guruji’s sixtieth anniversary of teaching in 1998.

He founded schools in Helsinki, Rome, Copenhagen, Milan, Buenos Aires and Montana, and visits each of them every year. The longest workshop is in Kovalam, where he teaches for two months.
